Chapter Fourteen

I walk into the dining room, and as I’m about to pass Hannah to walk into the kitchen, I stop and just look at her for a moment. She’s just sitting at the dining room table staring at her cellphone that’s sitting on the table in front of her, and she looks confused or concerned.

“Babe, is everything ok?” She takes a deep breath as she leans back in her chair and looks up at me shrugging her shoulders. “I don’t know. I called Isabell to see if we could get lunch together this weekend, but she made an excuse again.”

I sit down next to her, and as I take her hand, she entwines her fingers with mine and takes another deep breath.

“Brooke, I’m scared. The longer this case drags out, the more it looks like Isabell is guilty. We used to hang out all the time, but I haven’t been able to get her to do anything since Jared was murdered. Remember when she said she bought that house and was going to have a house warming party? Whatever happened to that? I’ve asked her, but she just says she hasn’t had time.”

“Do you know if the house actually exists?” Hannah nods, and scoots closer to me to loop her arm in mine. “Yes, she had to change all of her contact information for work. I didn’t tell you this because it was when your mom died, and I just didn’t want to add to your stress, but I kind of snooped and looked at the address. I looked it up online, and it’s a nice little house.”

“Well, at least we know that detail is true. Babe, I’m sorry I have been so preoccupied with everything else that I haven’t been monitoring this situation with you.”

“Honestly, I didn’t want you to. You have had way too much on your plate since your mom passed away. We both have. It’s not like there is anything to monitor anyway. They’re still not releasing any new details in the news. I just thought if we could hang out like we used to, it might ease some of my concerns or something. I just wanted to see her acting normal – like how she used to.”

“I’m sorry, babe. Do you think she’d come if we invite her over here for dinner one night?”

“No, I already tried many times. She has an excuse for everything. I guess I’m just going to give up and leave her alone. I told her when she has time, just to let me know.”

“She’ll come around when she is ready. How about we go do something today to try to relax?”

“That sounds nice. What are we going to do?”

“Well, I thought we could cater to one of our favorite hobbies and go to the bookstore and restock since we have read everything in the house. We should probably also pick up a couple of word-search books for you so you can cater to your absolute favorite hobby of pretending to be an old lady.
